Caroline
Song #23 - rough demo
I recently watched a documentary series and the subject’s story really stayed with me.
What struck me was how she reminded me of a younger version of myself. The way someone kind, sensitive, and open-hearted could find themselves in a relationship with someone who has a dark secret, and how hard it can be to see clearly when you’re in it.
It made me think about how sensitivity, empathy, and the desire to understand others, qualities we usually see as strengths, can sometimes make people more vulnerable to the wrong partners. It also made me think about low-self esteem and how that can inform who we choose to spend our time with.
I recognized pieces of that in past versions of myself, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. My heart ached for her as she talked about everything she endured.
I binged the series and wrote this song the next day.
Caroline
Lyrics
Caroline
your heart’s just like mine
There is no head
Our heart’s are right in time
Oh Caroline you didn’t know
Caroline he put on a show
Caroline
your smile’s just like mine
It hides the hurt the pain you feel inside
Oh Caroline don’t you know
Caroline we love you more
Than any guy you could bring home
Oh Caroline you deserve this world
Caroline you’re just like me
We never know exactly how to be
Oh Caroline it’s time to let go
You don’t need this mask anymore
You’re a light on your own
You bring more than you’ll ever know
Oh Caroline we love you so
Thanks for listening. It means more than you know.
If you enjoyed this post and want to support my efforts, you can buy me a coffee. Every little bit helps me keep the album project moving forward, and I’m truly grateful.

@Chris Hedden Thank you for the restack!
Beautiful work, Edie. I really love your voice. Wonderful melody and excellent use of dissonance (especially on the word Caroline), which captures the off-kilter vibe of a bad relationship and of hiding the pain as you reference. Also, that decision to break it down around 1:28 or so, then pull it up again, gives it great shape. Well done.
